How Smart Dogs
Has Evolved
How Has Smart Dogs Academy Changed Over the Years
By Jeff Todd | Smart Dogs Training Academy
Smart Dogs has changed a lot over the years, but the basic mission has stayed the same: help people understand their dogs, solve problems, and build better relationships with them.
When I started, my focus was much more on simply training the dog—teaching obedience, developing reliable responses, and getting the dog to do what I asked.
As my experience grew, so did my understanding of what really creates lasting results.
I realized that training the dog is only part of the equation. You have to train the owner, too.
That’s a big part of how Smart Dogs has evolved.
From Training Dogs to Training Dogs AND Owners
Early in my career, I was primarily focused on the dog in front of me.
Over the years, after personally training well over 20,000 dogs, I began seeing the same pattern over and over again.
I could take a dog, train it, and make tremendous progress. But when that dog went home, the owner had to know what to do with it.
If the owner didn’t understand the techniques, didn’t reinforce the training, or wasn’t consistent, the results could fade.
That taught me an important lesson:
If I really want to help people, I have to teach them how to communicate with their dogs—not just train the dog for them.
That philosophy is reflected in Smart Dogs today. The company describes its mission as “Training Dogs. Empowering Owners. Creating Lasting Change.” (Smart Dogs Dog Training)
My Experience Has Changed the Way I Train
I’ve also learned that there isn’t one perfect way to train every dog.
I’ve had the opportunity to learn from trainers in different disciplines—sport dogs, service dogs, protection and working dogs—and I’ve taken something valuable from each of those experiences.
Then I’ve spent decades putting those lessons to work with real dogs.
That’s where the real education happens.
You learn that one dog may respond beautifully to food while another couldn’t care less about a treat.
One dog may be motivated by a ball.
Another may want praise.
Another may need time to trust you before it will work for you.
You learn to pay attention.
You learn to adjust.
And you learn that the dog gets a vote.
That has become a very important part of my philosophy today.
We’ve Become More Focused on the Whole Picture
Smart Dogs has also evolved from simply being about obedience.
Today, our programs address a much broader range of needs, including puppy development, housebreaking, obedience, behavioral problems, reactivity, aggression, anxiety, fear, and real-world manners. The current Smart Dogs site reflects that broader range of programs. (Smart Dogs Dog Training)
We’ve also developed an emphasis on practical, real-world training.
I don’t want to train a dog simply so it looks good for five minutes in a training environment.
I want the dog to function at home.
I want it to walk with its owner.
I want it to be able to handle distractions.
I want the owner to be able to communicate with it.
I want the training to work in real life.
That’s a big difference.
The Academy Is Another Step in That Evolution
Smart Dogs Training Academy represents another evolution of that same idea.
I’ve accumulated decades of experience, and I don’t want that knowledge to only benefit the people who happen to train with me personally.
There are lessons I’ve learned over the years that can help virtually any dog owner understand their dog better.
So we’ve started building educational resources that allow owners to learn about dogs, training, behavior, communication, puppy development, and the fundamentals of creating good habits.
The goal is to make the knowledge more accessible.
I spent decades learning how to train dogs. Now I want to teach owners what I’ve learned.
We’ve Learned From the Challenges Too
Not everything along the way has been easy.
Running a dog-training business means dealing with dogs that don’t always respond the way you expect, owners with different expectations, changing technology, changing customer expectations, and the everyday challenges of running a business.
But every challenge teaches you something.
I’ve learned to listen more.
I’ve learned to communicate more clearly.
I’ve learned to be more selective about how I approach individual dogs.
I’ve learned that sometimes time is your best training tool.
And I’ve learned that owners need to be coached just as much as dogs need to be trained.
Those lessons have shaped the way Smart Dogs operates today.
What Hasn’t Changed
Even though the business has evolved, some things haven’t changed.
I still believe:
A trained dog is a happy dog.
I still believe obedience is the foundation for communication.
I still believe every dog is different.
I still believe motivation matters.
I still believe dogs need structure, leadership, and balance.
I still believe owners have to be involved.
And I still believe the ultimate goal isn’t simply a dog that knows commands.
It’s a dog and owner who understand each other.
Looking Ahead
Today, Smart Dogs is combining everything I’ve learned over my career with new ways of delivering that knowledge.
We’re continuing to provide hands-on training, while also developing educational resources through Smart Dogs Training Academy. We’re expanding the focus beyond obedience into behavior, puppy development, owner education, and dog safety. (Smart Dogs Dog Training)
That’s exciting to me because I don’t feel like I’m starting over.
I’m building on everything I’ve learned.
Every dog I’ve trained, every owner I’ve coached, every mistake I’ve made, every mentor I’ve learned from, and every difficult case I’ve worked through has contributed something to what Smart Dogs is today.
And I think that’s probably the biggest lesson of all:
The company has changed because I’ve changed.
I’ve accumulated more experience, developed a deeper understanding of dogs and people, and become more interested in teaching owners why things work—not just telling them what to do.
That’s where I see Smart Dogs going forward:
Training dogs. Empowering owners. Creating lasting change.
And continuing to learn along the way.
