What Does Smart Dogs Training Academy Mean to You Personally
By Jeff Todd | Smart Dogs Academy
Smart Dogs Academy means a lot more to me than simply having another business. It represents a lifetime of hard work, opportunity, independence, and a genuine desire to help people.
I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I grew up in the inner city, and from a very young age I was taught the value of working hard, taking responsibility, and creating your own opportunities. I learned early that if I wanted something different for my life, I couldn’t simply wait for it to happen.
I wanted more options.
I wanted to see more of the world. I wanted to experience different cultures, meet different people, and understand how other people lived. I didn’t want my circumstances or where I grew up to determine the boundaries of what I could accomplish.
And, incredibly, dogs became one of the things that helped open that door for me.
Dogs Took Me Around the World
I’ve been fortunate enough to have dogs take me places I never imagined I would go.
Over the years, I’ve filled up three passports traveling and working with dogs. I’ve lived in Europe, including Germany and France, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from people from many different cultures and backgrounds.
I’ve sold and worked with dogs internationally, including in places such as Thailand, China, Indonesia, Colombia, Mexico, and throughout the United States. I’ve also had the opportunity to participate in international working-dog events and demonstrations, including a security expo in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
When I look back at that journey, it’s pretty remarkable to think that something that started with my interest in dogs could eventually take me around the world.
Dogs became my passport to the world.
They gave me opportunities to meet people I never would have otherwise met, experience cultures I never would have experienced, and learn from some incredibly talented people.
And every one of those experiences added another layer to who I am today.
Hard Work Created the Opportunities
But I don’t take any of that for granted.
Growing up the way I did gave me a strong appreciation for opportunity. I understood that having an opportunity and making something of it are two different things.
You have to show up.
You have to work.
You have to be willing to learn.
You have to be willing to make mistakes and keep going.
That’s been a constant theme throughout my career.
Dog training didn’t become successful for me because I found one magic technique. It came from thousands of hours working with dogs, learning from other trainers, experimenting, making mistakes, figuring out what worked, and continually trying to become better.
And eventually, that experience accumulated into something much bigger.
I’ve personally trained well over 20,000 dogs, worked with virtually every type of breed and temperament, and dealt with everything from basic puppy development and obedience to serious behavioral challenges.
That’s a body of knowledge that I feel a responsibility to share.
That’s What Smart Dogs Training Academy Represents
That’s really what Smart Dogs Academy means to me.
It’s an opportunity to take everything I’ve learned over the course of my life and give it to somebody else.
Maybe it’s a first-time dog owner who has no idea where to begin.
Maybe it’s a family struggling with a difficult dog.
Maybe it’s somebody with a new puppy who wants to establish the right habits from the beginning.
Or maybe it’s someone who simply wants to understand their dog better.
I genuinely enjoy helping people solve those problems.
There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching an owner go from frustrated and confused to confident and capable.
And it’s even more rewarding when you see the relationship between the person and the dog change because they finally understand how to communicate with each other.
Paying It Forward
I’ve been fortunate to have some tremendous mentors and teachers throughout my career. People took the time to teach me, give me opportunities, and allow me to learn from them.
Smart Dogs Academy is, in part, my way of paying that forward.
I’ve accumulated decades of experience that I can’t possibly keep to myself.
If something I’ve learned can help someone avoid a mistake, prevent a behavioral problem, keep a dog in its home, or simply enjoy their dog more, then I want to share it.
That’s what motivates me.
It’s not just about teaching someone how to make their dog sit, stay, or come.
It’s about helping people understand why their dog behaves the way it does and giving them the tools to build a better relationship.
More Than a Business
So when I think about Smart Dogs Training Academy, I don’t primarily think about a company.
I think about the journey.
I think about where I started, where I’ve been, the people I’ve met, the dogs I’ve trained, the lessons I’ve learned, and the opportunities that dogs have given me.
I came from a place where I wanted more possibilities.
Dogs helped me discover those possibilities.
They took me around the world.
They introduced me to different cultures and people.
They gave me a career.
They challenged me to keep learning.
And they ultimately gave me an opportunity to help other people.
That’s what I want Smart Dogs Training Academy to represent.
Hard work. Opportunity. Education. Growth. And most importantly, helping people create better relationships with their dogs.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout this journey, it’s that success isn’t just about what you accomplish for yourself.
It’s also about what you can do with what you’ve learned to make someone else’s life better.
